Did you know that today, September 1st, is Acne Positivity Day? That’s news to me! I know it can be alarming to notice certain features on our face that we don’t want to have other people see, but the truth is that it is natural for even adults to be “faced” with acne too.

How does this relate here? Sometimes there will be occasions where your face might not look how you want to when we work together. More often than not, we are, naturally, our own harshest critic. We see even the tiniest little pimple, and it’s already the catalyst to send our world crumbling down. While others may not see it as easily as we can, we are the first to know. In today’s society, especially on social media, we let outside influences define our appearances which can attribute to our overall self-esteem. The truth is that what we may see on the surface of our skin may be what we see on the outside, but it can never define the person that you truly are in the inside. So whether you like to wear makeup or prefer to go bare-faced, go on and show us that brilliant smile! You’ll be surprised to see and hear how people will remember you for your smile, and that’s something to really be smiling about!

If one thing is true, our bodies will tell us when it needs improvement - drinking more water, hormone regulation, excess of food ingredients, or changes in facial features are just a few examples. Taking care of your skin is also a part of your overall health, so be sure to take good care of yourself! It is also a good idea to have a chat with a dermatologist so they can work together with you to put your best face forward too.

Some tips that can help you include:

-drinking plenty of water - water will help with flushing out the bad things that your body doesn’t need

-being mindful of the foods that you eat that might cause you to break out

-using a skin care routine that is gentle on your skin, and for your skin type (normal, dry, oily, or a combination of dry and oily)

-following up with moisturizer to lock what had been lost during cleansing

-having clean pillowcases before going to bed at night

-showering in the evening to have your hair clean and away from your face when going to bed

-applying a nourishing face mask

-applying eye cream in the evening and before applying make-up can help reduce puffiness and lighten the skin under your eyes

-applying makeup foundation and primers that also pair as skincare benefits to your look

-applying sunscreen to protect your face from UVA and UVB rays

-cleaning your makeup brushes and sponges thoroughly after EVERY use

-not touching your face with your hands

-cleansing your face thoroughly with a pH balanced cleanser or cleansing balm (I don’t recommend makeup removal wipes - they can be harsh in texture and formula, and may irritate your skin. They are also a temporary solution for removing makeup initially.)

-BONUS: having plenty of sleep to reduce cortisol levels that may contribute to hormone imbalance

I hope these tips help you in helping prepare for a future session, or any occasion! And of course, if you still feel that the efforts for preparation weren’t enough, have a chat with me, and I will be happy to work with you to help you look your very best for the final product that you and I can be proud of. Although I may not be able to take away those imperfections, I'll always capture the moments of the person you truly are.

Smile! Remember that you are amazing inside and out!!

Warm regards,
